 Library History

The formal opening of the first public library in Doddridge County was held March 31, 1952.  The library was located in the basement of the courthouse.  The County Commission appointed Robert L. Holland, Veda Davis, Herman Stuck, Mrs. Walter Stuart, and Hall Maxwell as the first Library Board of Trustees.

With the need for expansion, the Board held a fund drive to purchase and renovate the old opera house, moving the library to its new location in 1965.  In 1977, the library facilities were expanded to include the entire first floor of the building.

With the ending of revenue sharing in 1987, the library joined five other agencies to ask the voters to approve an excess levy.  It was passed by 63.6% of the vote in February of 1987 and renewed every three years since.

Library Today

There have been several improvements over the last three years at the Doddridge County Public Library.  We have been remodeling the Library.  During this time, we have installed new shelving throughout the library, created a Teen Area, painted murals in the Children's Room and relocated our office to be next to the Circulation Room.  A picture window was installed in the office to allow us to observe the Circulation Room while we work.  Two new restrooms have been added, one for the public and one for the staff.  A kitchenette area is located beside the new office for staff use.  The updated Circulation Room now includes a reading area with a flat screen TV for patrons to view the news.  We would love for you to visit our new and improved facility!
